The synth-pop genre song is composed by

Bernard Sumner, the latter also being the one who sings the lyrics. The track was composed for the Substance album and got a surrealist music video directed by
Philippe Decouflé, inspired by the interventions of
Marina Abramović and
Ulay as well as by the Bauhaus school.

Composed in D minor and G major, the song suggests sensations of euphoria from some influence. However, there are disagreements among the band members themselves about the interpretation. Peter Hook, the bassist at the time, stated:
"True Faith is one of New Order's best lyrics, in my opinion, but no, it's not about heroin which is something none of our song lyrics mention. I think it's easy to see that the lyrics reflect being under some influence."
Meanwhile, vocalist Bernard Sumner claims it's the perspective of an addict about drug use.

Controversy
The song has been involved in several controversies. Used in the soundtrack of the film
American Psycho, the song was also part of a disturbing video of a murder committed by adult film actor
Luka Rocco Magnotta, in Canada. While the song played, he dismembered his victim with an ice pick.
Recently, involved in another controversy with
Naughty Dog,
Neil Druckmann acknowledged that the music in the commercial was actually a plagiarism of Lotte Kestner's version, which after the case was resolved, praised the developer.
"Due to an oversight on our part, she was not credited as she should have been. Our sincere apologies – we are rectifying this as soon as possible. We hope that @lottekestner receives the recognition she deserves"
