The Northman

Director Robert Eggers admires authentic mythology, retelling the Greek story of Prometheus in The Lighthouse. His latest release is The Northman, which has already established itself as one of the best films of 2022. It follows Amleth from Alexander Skarsgård, a Viking who takes a path of revenge after losing his parents and being betrayed by his uncle, which shows a bit of Shakespearean influence in its story.

Along the journey, Amleth encounters visions of seers, Norse prophets who practiced black magic, and Valkyries, divine warriors who carry the souls of the fallen to Valhalla, a celestial Viking realm. The film is filled with surreal imagery and dreamlike action sequences, which reference the use of psychedelic drugs that Vikings used during this period.

Valhalla Rising

Before Nicolas Winding Refn introduced Ryan Gosling and his iconic scorpion jacket to the world with Drive, his earlier collaboration with Mads Mikkelsen takes the viewer 900 years back, where One Eye, an enslaved man, escapes from a Norwegian force with a boy who was also captured. They encounter a group of Norse invaders who discover that he may be a native of Hel.

This key plot point is a reference to Hel being both a Norse god and the name of a location. As a place, it is a realm to which Vikings go when they don't die in battle. As a Norse god, Hel was known to many Vikings as the daughter of Loki, the god of evil. Other sections of Hel included the realm of Niflheim and Nastond, a prison for criminals and sinners.

The Mask

The Mask features Jim Carrey in one of his most memorable roles – a green-faced trickster who wreaks humorous havoc on nightclubs and clueless gangsters when his alter ego, Stanley Ipkess, puts on a mask created by Loki. Several characters wear Loki's mask in the film, with their personalities changing according to their inner desires.

Although Loki's mask is not portrayed in the original Norse mythology, it correlates with his reputation as a "Trickster God" during the Viking Era. His shapeshifting abilities and ability to escape certain death extend to the mask's powers and save Stanley in dangerous moments of peril.

Midsommar

Midsommar is a film with so many references to mythology and ritualistic practices that viewers can watch it repeatedly and discover something new each time. The film follows Dani, a young woman who, unknowingly, enters a cult's residence with her friends after a traumatic incident.

There is a significant presence of ancient runes, one of which is a reference to the Norse god, Tyr, and can be found on Christian's shirt. Tyr is known as a God of Bloodshed and God of Justice. While it could be argued as a metaphor for some aspects of Dani and Christian's relationship, it can be taken literally as a tribute to Norse mythology.

Ragnarok

Ragnarok is a Norwegian adventure film that addresses the titular Norse apocalypse through the eyes of an archaeologist named Sigurd, who believes that his historical research could be aided by exploring Norway. He finds more than he expected when he comes face to face with a Jormungandr.

Jormungandr and Ragnarok are connected to each other in original Norse mythology. It is believed that the sea serpent held its mouth at the end of its tail around the world, and when it releases itself, it will result in the end of the world.
