New Alien Series Won't Focus on Ripley
Noah Hawley, the filmmaker leading the production, stated that the new Alien series will not be about Ripley. According to Hawley, this new production will not center on the character played by Sigourney Weaver.
The filmmaker shared this information in an interview with VanityFair.
“It’s not a Ripley story. She is one of the greatest characters of all time, and I think her journey was told perfectly, and I don’t want to mess with that. It’s a story that also takes place on Earth. Alien stories are always about being trapped… In a prison, on a spaceship. I thought it would be interesting to open it up a bit so the challenges of ‘what happens if we can’t contain them?’ are more immediate.”
The Series Will Address Inequality
If the new Alien series won’t be about Ripley, fans may naturally wonder what the main focus driving the plot will be.
Noah Hawley stated that the production will address inequality.
“In mine, you’ll see who’s giving the orders. Then you’ll see what happens when the inequality we’re struggling with now isn’t resolved. If, as a society, we can’t figure out how to support each other and spread wealth, then what will happen to us? There’s that amazing line from Sigourney Weaver to Paul Reiser that says ‘I don’t know which species is worse. At least they don’t screw each other over for profit.’”
The filmmaker also mentioned that the series will explore how humanity is caught between technology and the past.
“They are great monster movies, but they’re not just that. They’re about humanity being trapped between our parasitic, primordial past and our future of artificial intelligences — both trying to kill us. You have humans who can’t move forward or back. So I find that very interesting.”
