Years before Haymitch Abernathy from District 12 won the games, sixteen-year-old Lucy Gray Baird received the honor as the tenth annual victor of the event. Lucy Gray was mentored by Coriolanus Snow, the future president of Panem, who will be the focus of the prequel film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The tribute hid during the games while receiving outside help from Snow before poisoning the rest of the participants.

Mags Flanagan
The year following Lucy Gray Baird's victory, another female tribute emerged as a Hunger Games victor. Mags Flanagan became the first victor from District 4, surviving on nuts and her survival skills in making staffs.
She was also the first victor to move to Victor's Village before serving as a mentor. During the 75th Hunger Games, Mags volunteers to take Annie Crest's place, but she dies due to acid fog during the event.

Haymitch Abernathy
At 16 years old, Haymitch Abernathy was chosen in the second Quarter Quell and became District 12's other Hunger Games victor. He survived the event due to his various alliances and his skilled knife fighting. Eventually, it was down to Haymitch and a female tribute from District 1, but she accidentally killed herself by throwing an axe that ricocheted off the force field, killing her. As the only living victor from District 12, Haymitch served as Katniss and Peeta's mentor.

Finnick Odair
Finnick Odair won the 65th Hunger Games when he was only 14 years old, the youngest of all. As a male tribute from District 4, he was mentored by Mags. He was already skilled in combat, but his use of the trident in the arena brought his great victory, along with numerous gifts sent by sponsors. Like Mags, Finnick participated in the third Quarter Quell and formed an alliance with Katniss.

Johanna Mason
Johanna Mason, a tribute from District 7, was the 71st Hunger Games victor. She pretended to be weak so as not to be seen as a threat, but when the opportunity presented itself, Johanna attacked with fierce intensity. She came from a lumber district and knew how to work with an axe. Johanna was selected in the third Quarter Quell because she was the only living female tribute in her district.

Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark
While Peeta Mellark was selected for the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen volunteered to take her younger sister's place. Both tributes from District 12 survived the Games before reuniting. Katniss had her bow and arrow skills while Peeta was skilled in camouflage. As the last two tributes, the duo made a suicide pact until the Gamemaker announced they could share the winnings. Katniss and Peeta returned as tributes in the third Quarter Quell.
