Yuta Okkotsu's Origin in the Jujutsu Kaisen Universe
Even before becoming a relevant figure in the main plot, Yuta already had an established history within the universe created by Gege Akutami.
The Original Protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuta Okkotsu was, in practice, the first protagonist of the franchise. He starred in the manga that started it all: Jujutsu Kaisen 0, initially published as an independent work.
In this initial arc, we meet a young man tormented by the presence of the spirit of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto, who had died years before. Unlike other cases in the series' universe, it wasn't Rika haunting Yuta — it was Yuta himself who, unconsciously, had imprisoned her soul due to his immense cursed power.
This detail not only establishes the tragic tone of the character but also reveals something fundamental: Yuta was always exceptional.
Power Beyond the Curve
Since his introduction, Yuta is presented as a sorcerer of extremely high level, later classified as one of the few special grade sorcerers.
His most striking ability is the capacity to copy cursed techniques, something rare and extremely powerful within the logic of the series' universe. Furthermore, his connection with Rika — considered one of the most powerful curses ever seen — places him on a unique level.
This set of abilities makes Yuta frequently compared to legendary figures within the series, including Satoru Gojo himself.

Yuji Itadori as a Target
In the first episodes, Yuji begins to be treated as a threat. After previous events, his existence is considered too dangerous to continue being tolerated by the high ranks of sorcerers.
The decision is direct and brutal: Yuji must be executed.
Yuta as Executor
It's in this context that Yuta returns with full force. He receives the mission to eliminate Yuji — a task that, at first glance, he accepts without hesitation.
This point is crucial for the discussion about protagonism. By assuming an active role in the narrative, Yuta begins to drive events, while Yuji assumes a more reactive position.
However, as is common in Jujutsu Kaisen, nothing is as simple as it seems.

Hidden Motivations
Although he accepts the mission to execute Yuji, there are clear signs that Yuta has his own objectives. His relationship with other characters, especially with Gojo, suggests that he may be acting strategically.
This raises an important hypothesis: Yuta is not replacing Yuji, but rather acting as an agent within a larger conflict.
A Different Protagonist
