Ted Lasso season three: what you need to remember before watching

So you'd be forgiven for needing a little recap before you gear up for the new episodes. Since the Emmy-winning show premiered in August 2020, during the dark days of COVID, romantic relationships have come and gone, new players have brought their flair to the AFC Richmond and the coaching staff has gone through some changes. Coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) has accompanied the Greyhounds for two seasons, one in the Premier League - English football league - when Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) tried everything she could to sabotage the club, and a relegation to the lower tier, where they worked to get back to the elite in the second season. At the end of season 2 of "Ted Lasso", several developments happened off the field. Rebecca's father died, and the funeral stirred up complicated emotions for many, including Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein). As a result, poor Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) had to deal with a wrinkle in the love triangle. Here's everything you need to remember before watching season three of "Ted Lasso":

Nate went to the dark side

Nate finally acted on his growing resentment at the end of season 2. In the episode set at Rebecca's father's funeral, we saw Rupert Mannion, former owner of the AFC Richmond, whisper in Nate's ear after he tells Rebecca that he's bought the competing club West Ham United. Throughout season 2, Nate advances further in his role as coach for AFC Richmond, pulling off a last-minute save play in a match. He inadvertently dubs himself the Wonder Boy, but lack of validation or support from his father and jealousy of Ted Lasso drive Nate to even more drastic measures. Season 2 ends with the back of Nate's gray-haired head at a training session for West Ham, where he's now the head coach, promising more tension and conflict in season three. Isaac is team captain

Before stepping into his new role alongside Nate and Coach Beard, Roy picks Isaac (Kola Bokinni) as the team's next captain. Isaac goes through a mental spiral with this new responsibility, which is when Ted reaches out to Roy to ask if he can help. Roy gets Isaac to meet him at an arena to play football, and Isaac regains his charm. Roy suffered a serious knee injury in a tackle at the end of season 1. He became a TV commentator to comment on his former teammates, but realized (reluctantly, because it meant Ted was right) that coaching is his true calling. His arrival on the field is greeted with warm cheer of "He's here, he's there, he's every bloody where." Ted became more self-aware with the help of Dr. Sharon Fieldstone. Early in season 2, Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández) accidentally kills the team mascot when the greyhound Earl jumps in front of his penalty kick. Higgins (Jeremy Swift) hires a team psychologist as a result to get Dani back in game shape. As a result, Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) ends up seeing the entire team, with players seeking her advice on a wide range of issues. Ted avoids the idea of therapy at all costs, but as his anxiety worsens (we see hints of this for the first time in season one at his first day on the field and at the surprise press conference Rebecca gives him), he begins to think maybe it's worth it. After overcoming his misconceptions about therapy, he reveals that his father committed suicide and this resulted in Ted never wanting to give up on anything in his life. Additionally, he separated from his wife in season one after she expressed that she no longer felt the same way about him. A reminder also that Ted slept with Rebecca's friend Sassy the night he signed the paperwork to divorce Michelle after having a panic attack at a karaoke bar. Roy and Keeley might be off

Captain-turned-coach Roy Kent and Jamie Tartt's ex-girlfriend and now team publicist Keeley Jones become the couple of season 2, and Roy's niece Phoebe seals the deal when she approves of Keeley. The two get together before Roy realizes he wants to be a coach, so they go from working apart to working in the same place. Keeley tells him she needs some boundaries since they now see each other most of the time, and they make it work until Keeley gets an offer to lead her own public relations firm. This coincides with Jamie telling Keeley he still loves her at Rebecca's father's funeral, which she shares with Roy. It turns out Roy has a moment with Phoebe's teacher at school. When Keeley leaves her office at AFC, she suggests she and Roy break up for a while before next season because she needs to prepare to take on this new venture. Rebecca and Sam got together, but Rebecca needs space

In addition to becoming the team's new sponsor when Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) protests against Dubai Air, Bantr also brings Sam and Rebecca together, not knowing at first. Sam did a photo shoot with Dubai Air, and his father warned him they own Cerithium Oil, which refused to clean up a major spill in the Niger Delta (Sam is from Nigeria). He and Rebecca match on Bantr, which focuses only on conversation, and they chat a bit because there are no profile pictures. Sam shoots his shot and says they should meet, and when they find out, Rebecca tries to escape, but they end up getting together for a bit. Jamie and his father's fight

Big shot Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), who has enough talent to give him a huge ego, was called back to Manchester City in season 1, when Rebecca still wanted to sabotage Ted's plans, so she agreed to terminate his contract. He also refused to train because Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernandez) rivaled his talent. He then played a bit with Man City, but left to pursue a reality show. When he tried to get back to Man City, they wouldn't take him back, so Ted recruited him, much to the team's disappointment. A bit past the halfway mark of season 2, Jamie's father bursts into the locker room drunk and verbally antagonizes his son after a loss to Man City, wearing his son's sky blue shirt instead of the royal blue of the AFC Richmond. Jamie tries to control himself in front of his father, but eventually he punches him in the face. Coach Beard escorts Mr. Tartt out and Roy Kent gives Jamie a big hug after the incident, which triggers the father-son dynamic across the board with Nate and Coach Lasso. It's after this moment that Ted calls Dr. Fieldstone and talks about his father's death. What is Ted Lasso

Developed by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt, Ted Lasso is based on a character of the same name that Sudeikis first played in a series of commercials for NBC Sports' coverage of the Premier League. The plot of Ted Lasso follows the life of a charismatic college American football coach hired to coach a Premier League team, AFC Richmond. The series won the 2021 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series and became the most-watched series on Apple TV+. For his work on the series, lead actor Jason Sudeikis won the Golden Globe and Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
