Love, fame and tragedy: the real-life series that's got everyone talking
What is the story of Kleo?
The plot follows Kleo Straub, a highly trained young spy who works for the Stasi, the secret service of former East Germany during the Cold War.
Right at the beginning, she executes an important mission: assassinate a businessman in West Berlin. However, instead of being rewarded, Kleo is betrayed by her own superiors — including people close to her — and ends up imprisoned.
During her time in prison, her life changes completely. She suffers abuse, loses the child she was expecting, and sees her loyalty to the system crumble.
The freedom that begins the revenge
With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Kleo is released. But upon leaving prison, she discovers that her conviction was part of a much larger conspiracy.
That's when the true engine of the series begins: revenge.
Determined to discover who betrayed her and why, Kleo begins an intense journey that mixes espionage, chases and assassinations — all connected to a mysterious object: a red briefcase that holds secrets capable of impacting the European political landscape.
A thriller that mixes history and fiction
One of the great differentials of Kleo is the historical backdrop. The series takes place at the end of the Cold War, a period marked by division between East Germany (socialist) and West Germany (capitalist).
The presence of the Stasi, for example, is not fiction. The agency really existed and was known for its strong activities in espionage, surveillance and political repression.
Fiction with creative freedom
Despite the historical basis, the series makes clear from the beginning that it doesn't seek total fidelity to facts. It even plays with this by stating that it's a "true story — that never happened."
The protagonist is fictional, but her construction was inspired by real Stasi manuals, which brings authenticity to the espionage and combat scenes.
Additionally, the plot also draws from the well of literary classics, such as The Count of Monte Cristo, by exploring the theme of revenge after an unjust imprisonment.
Characters and cast: who brings the story to life
The big highlight is Jella Haase, who plays Kleo. Her performance manages to balance coldness, vulnerability and irony, creating a complex and unpredictable character.
Kleo is not a traditional heroine. She is violent, impulsive and, at the same time, extremely charismatic.
Other important names
The cast also includes:
• Dimitrij Schaad (Sven, the police officer who pursues her)
• Julius Feldmeier
• Vladimir Burlakov
• Marta Sroka
• Vincent Redetzki
The dynamic between Kleo and Sven, in fact, is one of the most interesting points of the narrative, bringing moments of tension and unexpected humor.
How many seasons does Kleo have?
Currently, the series has:
• 2 seasons available
• 14 episodes total (8 in the first and 6 in the second)
The story progresses continuously, expanding the universe of the conspiracy and deepening the protagonist's past.
