In 1963, Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin) lives for her house and doesn't have partnership with her husband, Rob (Sam Jaeger). He even bought the house without consulting her. Beth's world turns upside down when she discovers he's cheating on her with waitress April (Sadie Calvano). In 1984, socialite and art gallery owner Simone (Lucy Liu) seems to be living her best life until she's surprised by the discovery that her husband, Karl (Jack Davenport), is gay.
Meanwhile, in present day, lawyer Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) has an open marriage with Eli (Reid Scott) and their relationship is strained when they both fall in love with the same person. The series shows how the role of women in society has changed over time, but how they deal with betrayal hasn't so much.
