Devil May Cry brings all the formulas we know and love to the forefront. Frantic battles, soundtracks of pure rock with a house twist, and of course, a spectacular plot.

The third game in the chronology is
Devil May Cry 4, which was released in January 2008. The game is a direct sequel to
Devil May Cry (the first one) and brings a new protagonist, Nero. He's a young half-human, half-demon, like Dante, who belongs to a group of worshippers of Sparda (father of Dante and Vergil) and has the mission to protect sect members against demons that threaten them. The story begins with Dante invading one of the sect's masses and assassinating Sanctus, the "Pope" of the church that idolizes Sparda. Because of this, Dante, who was previously seen as an ally for being Sparda's son, becomes the target of Nero's fury, and we'll have to go defeat him, as well as discover why Dante took such action.
Although it has a new character, the
gameplay is very similar. Its main difference is the demonic arm that Nero possesses, which is heavily exploited in the game's mechanics. In addition to Nero, Dante also becomes playable once we discover the entire plot and the real culprits.

The fourth game in the chronology is precisely the one announced at
E3 2018, during Microsoft's conference,
Devil May Cry 5, which is scheduled to launch in mid-October 2019.
Based on Devil May Cry Light Novels N°1 and N°2, the game has 3 protagonists: Nero, who is one of the protagonists of the fourth edition, Tony Redgrave, Dante's alter ego, and Nico, granddaughter of Nell Goldstein. For those who don't know, Nell Goldstein was the one who made Dante's weapons in the first Novel, Ebony and Ivory, which are the main pistols he uses throughout the franchise. Nico will be the support. She is the owner of .45 Caliber Works and the one who will provide the arms for Nero to be able to fight.
One of the things that confuses fans a lot about the chronological order is precisely when the novels take place. The first one occurs before DMC 3 and tells the story of Dante and Nell's relationship. The second novel takes place after
Devil May Cry and before
Devil May Cry 2. Because
Devil May Cry 4 happens almost immediately after the first game, it's possible to fit
Devil May Cry 5 in this position.

Some of the fans' speculation is whether the villain of this new game will actually be Vergil, since in the novel the character Gilver is his alter ego, just as Redgrave is Dante's, who apparently steals Nero's arm. There's also the question of what happened to Kirye, who is Nero's romantic interest in the fourth edition of the franchise.
Only in 2019 will we know the entire plot of the new game, as well as who the third protagonist is, V (yes, his name is simply V). According to leaks, his only desire is simply revenge for something or someone.

And the fifth and final game is precisely the "Forgettable" Devil May Cry 2. Released in January 2003, the game tells the story of Dante and Lucia fighting to stop Arius, who wishes to summon the demon Argosax and gain supreme power.
Because it has an extremely simple and straightforward plot, Devil May Cry 2 focused heavily on the soundtrack and took advantage of the previous game's gameplay. However, it brought a much more serious Dante and a supporting character who serves to fill in the gaps that Dante's route leaves.
Now that we know the chronological order, all that's left is to wait and see how the entire plot of
Devil May Cry 5 will unfold and how
Capcom will take advantage of the Light Novels' stories.
