Netflix's decision follows an increasingly common trend among major digital platforms: requiring more modern systems to maintain security standards, image quality and performance compatible with current technologies.
The change directly affects Brazilian consumers who still use old televisions or smartphones that no longer receive official updates.
Why did Netflix stop working on older devices?
Netflix explained, in different support communications over the past years, that certain devices become incompatible when they can no longer meet minimum technical requirements required by the application.
Among the main factors are:
New security standards
Modern applications depend on updated data protection protocols. Older systems no longer receive vulnerability fixes, which increases risks of invasion and information leaks.
Support for modern video codecs
Today, streaming platforms work with more advanced image compression and transmission technologies, such as HEVC and AV1. Many older devices do not have adequate decoding capacity.
Processing limitations
Mobile phones and TVs launched more than ten years ago have limited hardware to run recent versions of the Netflix app. This directly impacts app loading, stability, streaming quality, HD and 4K playback, and compatibility with new platform features.
TVs that lost Netflix compatibility
The list includes mainly Smart TVs manufactured between 2010 and 2015. In many cases, the application will remain installed on the device but will no longer function correctly.
Affected Apple TVs
Old Apple TV models are among the devices that lost official support: Apple TV 1st generation, Apple TV 2nd generation, and Apple TV 3rd generation. Devices released before 2015 no longer support recent versions of the Netflix app.
Affected Samsung Smart TVs
Samsung is also among the most impacted manufacturers. Models manufactured between 2010 and 2014 are on the list, especially those identified by the letters C, D, E, F, and H. These letters appear in the TV's model code. Example: UN40H5100 - in this case, the letter "H" indicates the year of the device line.
Affected Sony models
Several TVs from the Bravia line lost compatibility, including KDL, XBR, W95, and X95 series. Devices manufactured between 2011 and 2014 are among the most affected.
Old LG and Panasonic TVs
According to user and manufacturer reports, Smart TVs from LG and Panasonic manufactured before 2015 have also begun to show incompatibility with Netflix. In many cases, the app has not received updates for years.
Mobile phones that can no longer open Netflix
The change also affects older Android smartphones and iPhones. Now, Netflix requires Android 7.0 or higher and iOS 17 or higher. Incompatible devices can no longer install the app, update the app, open Netflix normally, or receive fixes.
