Why do action movies exaggerate so much?

Accelerated pace - Realistic scenes can be slower and less impactful.
Visual appeal - Explosions and stunts impress more than scientific accuracy.
Shooting cars doesn't cause explosions
One of the most common scenes in action movies is the instant explosion of a car after a few shots. In productions like Lethal Weapon, it's enough to hit the fuel tank to cause an explosion. In reality, gasoline doesn't explode easily that way. For an explosion to occur, a specific set of conditions is needed, including an adequate mixture of vapor and oxygen. In most cases, the car would simply leak fuel — without any cinematic explosion.
Grenades don't throw people through the air
Another classic scene involves grenades throwing characters meters away. Grenades are designed to disperse shrapnel. The main damage comes from metal fragments, not the blast wave. And the famous "flying through the air"? That's extremely unlikely. The force of the explosion doesn't act that way on the human body.
Long fights are pure fiction
Combat scenes in movies like The Raid or John Wick are intense and prolonged. In real life, physical confrontations are quick. The human body becomes exhausted within a few seconds of intense effort. A fight can end with a single blow.
Gasoline doesn't catch fire from a cigarette
One of the most persistent myths is igniting gasoline with a cigarette. Scientific experiments show that a cigarette doesn't reach sufficient temperature to ignite liquid gasoline. What would be needed is an open flame or spark with adequate energy. Why does it work in movies? Narrative convenience — it's a quick solution to create a dramatic scene.
Car chases are highly unrealistic
Chases are one of the pillars of the genre. Characters drive at high speeds while talking or looking back. In real life, this would be impossible.
