The Monastery brings an incredible horror story to Netflix screens
Originally released in October 2022, The Monastery is directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski, who achieved success with his 2020 horror-comedy Off the Grid. The original title, "Ostatnia Wieczerza", which means "The Last Supper", anticipates the religious elements present in the film. The production is a striking example of how Polish horror is making its way into mainstream media, although it's not intended for those with a sensitive stomach. Set in 1987, the film revolves around Marek, a police officer tasked with discovering what happened to seven women who disappeared near a monastery. Posing as a monk, he infiltrates the ranks of the religious order and soon realizes he's gotten himself into a much bigger problem than he imagined, literally. From the film's opening, in a nod to The Exorcist (1976), we are introduced to a priest running desperately toward a church altar with a baby. This baby in question has a strange mark on his chest, and the priest is trying to kill him, but is shot and killed by police before completing the act. We then jump ahead 30 years to 1987, when Marek arrives at an isolated monastery. However, Marek's disguise is discovered, and from there, The Monastery plunges into a dizzying spiral, revealing the true dark nature of the monastery and its inhabitants. The film's obscure secrets and disturbing plot twists keep viewers in suspense as they witness Marek's terrifying journey in search of the truth. The film was very well produced, offering a claustrophobic and unsettling atmosphere, where terror and the supernatural intertwine in an intriguing plot. Convincing performances and visually impactful scenes contribute to the film's chilling atmosphere. The Monastery is an intense cinematic experience that challenges expectations and reveals the dark depths of a world where faith and evil intertwine in surprising ways.Film surprises by bringing new elements to an exorcism film
