One of the details from The Rings of Powerseries that grabbed viewers' attention the most is the friendship between Elrond and Durin, which was one of the highlights of the show's second episode. Although we've already seen in the The Lord of the Rings trilogy the friendship between an elf and a dwarf, in the case of Legolas and Gimli, it's not common in Middle-earth.
Here we'll explain the details of a friendship that is not accepted by the elves and even less by the dwarves, two of the most important races created by J. R. R. Tolkien.

The Origin of the Friendship Between Elrond and Durin Remains a Mystery

As highlighted above, the friendship between an elf and a dwarf in Middle-earth is not something common, and it's actually hidden by Elrond and Durin in front of the other dwarves. When the elf visited Khazad-dûm, the two pretended not to know each other until Durin finally called his friend to meet his family at his home. Although this friendship isn't reported in the books, it seems to be very strong in The Rings of Power.
Although the beginning of the two's friendship remains a mystery for now, it should be explained later in the series.
The Relationship Between the Races is Ancient
In the First Age, the elf Fëanor sculpted the three Silmarils, which are even referenced in the series when Elrond visits Celebrimbor in Eregion. At the time of the creation of the jewels, the elven king Thingol requested the dwarf craftsmen to create a necklace that could contain his Silmaril. However, once completed, the smiths from Belegost found the jewel so perfect that they decided not to deliver it. This caused a great conflict, resulting in the death of Thingol and several dwarves.
Despite having a common enemy, in this case Sauron, the races remained enemies for many years, changing their stance with the purpose of forging the Rings of Power, where Elrond, Celebrimbor, and Durin will all be involved in the upcoming episodes, as the series has already suggested.

As we all know, the power of the rings doesn't turn out as expected, since Sauron secretly forged the One Ring with the intent to dominate all others. However, the villain's plan also doesn't work out, causing him to attack Eregion, which is aided by the cities of Lindon and Khazad-Dûm, which should appear in the upcoming episodes of the series.
Due to these details, the importance of both Elrond and Durin is great, with the beginning of the friendship between the two set to be revealed soon in the series The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video.
