Resident Evil 6 is definitely the most controversial game in the franchise, since it tried to take the Capcom title in a new direction. The game was released in 2012 and despite being surrounded by expectations, the title was a failure among fans. With multiple campaigns and gameplay focused on action, the game didn't please many fans who were expecting a horror gameplay experience, as we saw in its predecessors.
Additionally, the story changes, diverse scenarios, and mission duration are the factors that even made Capcom confirm the game's failure.

Changes weren't well accepted by fans
With the great success of the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom planned to launch a game with a different direction from the others. Focused on action, the game left behind its horror roots, mainly with the arrival of J'avos as enemies. Many fans complained about the villains, as they consider that they don't fit the game's theme, since they always appear in groups and are much faster than the previous monsters.
Furthermore, each campaign was created differently by Capcom, inspired by various genres, except one doesn't have the horror elements we saw previously. Only in the Ada Wong campaign do we find original elements that we saw in other franchise titles, being decisive for the failure of Resident Evil 6.
Capcom admits that Resident Evil 6 is a failure

Considered by many fans as a controversial game, Resident Evil 6 was even compared to B-horror movies, whether by its story or even its scenarios. Some players still say they play the title frequently, but without the excitement they would have in another franchise game.
However, Capcom ended up bringing back the horror atmosphere with Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, released respectively in 2017 and 2021.
