With the launch of the Maul – Lord of the Shadows series, the character returns to the spotlight, further expanding his trajectory within the galaxy far, far away. Below, we revisit his complete history — from cinemas to animations — revealing details that many fans may not know.
Darth Maul's Origin in Cinema
The Introduction in The Phantom Menace
Darth Maul was introduced to the public in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, directed by George Lucas. As an apprentice of Darth Sidious, he was tasked with executing critical missions for the Sith, including the capture of Queen Padmé Amidala.
Unlike other villains in the saga, Maul barely speaks. His presence is built through his posture, body language, and mainly his combat ability. He represents the brute force of the Dark Side, while his master acts as the brain behind the operations.
The Duel That Marked a Generation
The confrontation between Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Obi-Wan Kenobi became one of the most iconic moments in the franchise.
Armed with his dual lightsaber, Maul stars in a choreographed battle of rare intensity. The duel culminates in Qui-Gon's death and Maul's apparent defeat, as he is cut in half by Obi-Wan and thrown into an abyss.
At the time, many believed that was the end of the character. But, as the Star Wars universe would later prove, the story was far from over.
The Unexpected Return in The Clone Wars
Survival Fueled by Hatred
Maul's reintroduction happened in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, set between episodes II and III of the saga.
Contrary to all expectations, Maul survived his fatal wound. Using the power of the Dark Side and fueled by intense hatred, he managed to stay alive, building himself an improvised mechanical body.
The Importance of Savage Opress
The reunion with his brother, Savage Opress, was crucial to his recovery. Found in an almost animalistic state on an isolated planet, Maul is taken back to Dathomir, where he undergoes a process of physical and mental restoration.
Under the care of Mother Talzin, leader of the Nightsisters, he recovers his sanity — but does not abandon his thirst for revenge.
The Rise in the Criminal Underworld
Instead of returning directly to the Sith, Maul forges his own path. He builds a criminal empire, forming the so-called Collective Shadow, an alliance of illegal organizations that comes to dominate entire sectors of the galaxy.
His greatest achievement during this period is the conquest of Mandalore, where he defeats Pre Vizsla and takes control of the planet.
The Confrontation with Darth Sidious
Maul's growth does not go unnoticed by Darth Sidious. Considering him a threat, the Sith master confronts his former apprentice in a brutal battle.
In this confrontation, Savage Opress is killed and Maul is captured, showing that despite being powerful, he is still not a match for his former master.
