"Good Morning Veronica": Why does Klara Castanho's character eat buttons?

In addition to addressing several controversial and very important issues, the series presents a somewhat eccentric behavior from Klara Castanho's character. During various moments, scenes are shown where Ângela eats buttons from clothes. She does this mainly when she's in a state of anxiety. 

But why does Ângela display this behavior? 

Even though the series doesn't address the issue broadly, it is understood by specialists that Klara Castanho's character suffers from a disorder. In moments of tension, Ângela ends up eating buttons from clothes, something that is clearly not part of the food category, obviously.

This disease is called "Pica Syndrome", which consists of the patient feeling an overwhelming urge to eat things that are clearly not food. 

This syndrome is commonly developed by children and by adult women during pregnancy. In general, the behavior is a serious indicator of some nutritional deficiency. 

Since the series didn't address the issue in greater depth, we don't know for sure whether Ângela developed this behavior during childhood or if it started in adolescence. But the trigger for her to start behaving this way was probably her history of abuse. Since this type of syndrome is directly linked to the nervous system, we can understand that the anxiety generated by troubling situations is indeed her trigger.
