What are the Butterflies in the Peacemaker series
Project Butterfly
While in The Suicide Squad we had Project Starfish, in the Peacemaker series we were introduced to Project Butterfly. The enemies faced by Peacemaker in the production give the project its name, just as Starro gave name to Project Starfish.
It's important to say that James Gunn shows originality in the series, introducing enemies that don't appear to be adapted from any DC comic book work. Although we have characters that even carry "butterfly" in their name, none of them seem to have a connection with the opponents presented in the new production.
In other words, the Peacemaker series delivers something original, breaking free from an adaptation of the comic book stories.
Butterflies controlling humans
In the third episode of the series, when he receives the mission to end the life of a United States senator, Peacemaker notices very strange behavior in the man and his family. After showing himself opposed to killing children, and seeing his ally carrying out the job, the anti-hero finds himself in a difficult situation. Getting rid of the target, Peacemaker hits him square in the face with a shot.
The big problem is that some time before, the anti-hero had seen the senator and his family pouring some goo into bowls, and then eating it. Something was obviously wrong. After that, the situation becomes even more sinister when from the head of the senator, who was hit by Peacemaker's shot, a large insect emerges.
Coming out from inside the man, the considerably large insect shows no signs of injury, exposing that the shot hadn't hit it in any way.
What are the butterflies
Not much has been revealed about the butterflies yet, but it's already clear that they are parasites that dominate the human body, with the individual still alive. In addition, it's also obvious that once the parasite is inside a body, the person stops answering for their own actions, being completely dominated by the "insect".
Alien origin and ambition
It's extremely likely that the butterflies have an alien origin, just like Starro in The Suicide Squad. In addition, there are even some similarities such as the fact of dominating human bodies and then controlling them.
In one of the series episodes, Peacemaker is confronted by a woman who obviously became the host of one of these parasites. After much effort, the anti-hero manages to defeat her with a shockwave. In the woman's house, the character finds an alien object, which is another indication that the butterflies' origin is not from planet Earth.
Although no figure has been presented as leader of the butterflies, it's possible to conclude that the parasites' ambition is to spread through society, seeking a way to take control, which explains why a senator was chosen as a host.
Butterflies' powers
Although they haven't shown much strength or notable powers as beings themselves, the butterflies become really dangerous when they dominate a human body. The host starts to have abilities considered non-human.
The hosts display more ability than what is considered common, just as their strength is far superior to that of a normal human.
