In the story, young writer Marcus Goldman (
Ben Schnetzer) achieves fame and success right at the launch of his first novel. He becomes a rising celebrity and even graces magazine covers and attends trendy parties. But when his publisher pressures him to write a new title, he faces creative block and decides to seek out his mentor, Harry Quebert (Patrick Dempsey), in search of inspiration in a small village in New Hampshire.
During his stay in the town, the body of a young woman who had been missing for 30 years is found in his mentor's garden. It's Nola Kellergan (Kristine Froseth), with whom Quebert had a past involvement. The body is discovered with a copy of one of the writer's books, leading police to associate him with the murder. Marcus then sets aside his mission to write a new book and pursues a new goal: to complete the investigation of the crime with his own hands to prove his mentor's innocence.
The plot unfolds across three time periods: in the summer of 1975, when writer Harry Quebert meets young Nola Kellergan; in the late 1990s, in New York, during literature classes where Marcus Goldman idolizes professor Harry; and in 2006, when Harry is arrested on suspicion of Nola's murder.
