Although it's not a topic much discussed in the entertainment world, there are several incredible LGBTQIA+ characters in anime.
Their numbers have been growing more and more as new productions arrive and classic anime get remodeled to bring even more diversity. Anyone who watches One Piece has already seen an example of this with Emporio Ivankov and his Momoiro Island.
But if it wasn't as obvious as in One Piece, could you say which characters from your favorite anime are LGBT? With that in mind, Trecobox decided to bring you a list with 8 well-known characters who are LGBT and maybe you didn't know.

Homura Akemi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
In Madoka Magica we follow the story of Madoka Kaname, who has a magical encounter and then starts fighting witches. But within the story, there's a character who is simply in love with the protagonist: Homura Akemi.
Homura even confessed her love for Madoka, and always says that one of her greatest desires is to be with the protagonist, which greatly influences her actions and decisions in the work.

LGBTQIA+ Characters in Anime
Sailor Uranus (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal - The Movie) One of the openly LGBT characters, Sailor Uranus has a relationship with Sailor Neptune, and in the manga there's a moment where she mentions not identifying as either a woman or a man. In other words, she's a non-binary hero. She appears in the Sailor Moon Eternal film, which is divided into two parts and is based on one of the story arcs from Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga. Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Another openly gay character is Utena. In the plot of Revolutionary Girl Utena, the protagonist falls in love with Anthy, a woman whom she swears to protect from everything.
At first, it's hard to understand what's going on between the two, which led fans to create a lot of speculation. But in the anime movie, it becomes clear that the two have a romantic relationship.

Ryoji Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club)
Ryoji Fujioka is one of the most interesting characters in Ouran High School Host Club because he's a crossdresser (a person who identifies with the opposite sex but only dresses as they identify and doesn't feel the need to change their sex).
In the anime, Ryoji starts crossdressing after his wife's death, when he says he's no longer interested in being with women. This is an excellent example of expression in anime.

Yukito Tsukishiro (Cardcaptor Sakura)
Sakura Card Captors became quite well-known in Brazil after being aired on Cartoon Network and the now-defunct TV Globinho from Rede Globo.
In the story there's the character Yukito, who has a close friendship with Sakura's brother, Touya. The two constantly declare their affection for each other and are one of the first openly gay couples in anime.

Yuzu Aihara (Citrus)
Yuzu is an openly lesbian character and plays an excellent role representing the LGBTQIA+ community. Outgoing, she's one of the main characters of the work and always shows that she's not ashamed of who she is.
One of the most interesting things is that Yuzu discovered she was gay during the anime, and dealt with it in a very mature way. Acting as an example for some of the issues the LGBT community goes through.

Kaworu Nagisa (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Despite having a tragic ending, Kaworu Nagisa from Neon Genesis Evangelion doesn't hide his feelings for Shinji. Being very clear, he says that he loves Shinji, and Shinji seems to reciprocate a little.
Unfortunately the relationship between the two remains only in the realm of ideas, but in any case it's good to see that there's an LGBT character in one of the greatest anime ever made.
