Astronaut Mark Watney is sent on a mission to Mars, but after a severe storm, he is presumed dead, abandoned by his colleagues, and wakes up alone on the inhospitable planet with scarce supplies and no idea how to reconnect with his team or return to Earth. He then begins a grueling fight for his own survival, using all of his scientific knowledge to make contact and return home.
